Technology Free
Lithuania
Our event held in Vilnius from July 1 to July 5, 2024, constitutes the first phase of the "Technology Free" project.
The Technology-Free Erasmus+ project aims to support the creative and holistic development of children in natural learning environments. In the first phase held in Frankfurt, we experienced the innovative approaches of the Waldorf education system. Following these activities, where we explored the concept of education integrated with nature, we are now gathering in Vilnius to deepen our understanding of Orff and Waldorf methodologies, gain new perspectives, and strengthen international collaboration.
The first day of the Technology-Free Project in Vilnius began with a visit to Didlaukio Kindergarten. We had the opportunity to meet local educators and observe the practical applications of the Waldorf education system. Following the school tour in the morning, we visited Vilnius Municipality to explore the city’s historical and cultural essence. The day concluded with a serene boat trip on the Neris River. These experiences provided a wonderful start to deepen our understanding of the core values of the project.
On the second day of our project, we conducted an activity focused on interaction with children. Drawing inspiration from Waldorf pedagogy, we explored methods to support children’s imagination and confidence through storytelling and rhythm exercises. While storytelling encouraged children to express their creative thoughts, rhythm activities enhanced collaboration and harmony within the group. This event provided a valuable opportunity to observe children’s natural learning processes and apply enjoyable and effective teaching methods without relying on digital tools. In the afternoon, we participated in a creative workshop at Splatter Studio, collaborating with fellow educators. This workshop provided a rich opportunity to explore various teaching approaches and exchange ideas. The day concluded with cultural activities exploring the vibrant city of Vilnius.
On the third day of our project, we had the chance to thoroughly explore two kindergartens in Vilnius that embrace the Waldorf education model. In the morning, we visited the "Coliukė" kindergarten. This kindergarten stood out with its classroom environments created using natural materials and activities that prioritize children’s creativity. The setting, where children develop social skills through free play and engage their imagination through storytelling and music, exemplified the core principles of Waldorf pedagogy.
Later in the day, we moved to an open-air kindergarten on Pūčkorių Street. This kindergarten adopts an educational approach where children are in constant interaction with nature. Here, children play with surrounding trees, plants, and natural elements while also developing a sense of responsibility and environmental awareness. These educational practices in a natural setting enhance children’s physical and emotional growth while deepening their learning processes.
The day continued with a visit to Trakai Castle, where we discovered the cultural richness of Lithuania. This experience enhanced our understanding of the importance of cultural context in education.
The fourth day of our project began with a workshop focused on enhancing children’s creativity and sensory skills. Titled "Art and Sounds in Nature," the session featured craft projects using natural materials to spark imagination, while music inspired by nature enriched children’s sensory perception. The children had the opportunity to express their creativity both individually and in groups. These experiences highlighted the holistic impact of Waldorf and Orff approaches in education.
In the evening, we gathered with project partners for an event accompanied by traditional Lithuanian cuisine. The gathering, enriched with music and conversations about Lithuanian culture, provided an excellent opportunity to celebrate the shared goals and experiences of the project. Participants reflected on the day’s insights, making this unique educational journey even more meaningful.
The fifth and final day of our project began with evaluation and forward planning. In the morning session, we reviewed all the activities conducted throughout the week, identifying our strengths and areas for improvement. A SWOT analysis with partner institutions facilitated an exchange of ideas for the next steps of the project. This process provided a solid foundation for reinforcing what we learned and maximizing the long-term impact of the project.
In the afternoon, an emotional farewell ceremony brought participants together. Certificates were presented to participants, emphasizing the importance of the experiences gained and the connections formed during the week. This meaningful ceremony was not just the conclusion of a project but also the beginning of future collaborations. This unique week in Vilnius once again highlighted the power of creativity and nature-focused approaches in education.
We have completed this unforgettable week in our Technology-Free Erasmus+ project. This unique experience in Vilnius was not only an educational endeavor but also an opportunity to build bridges across cultures. Together, we explored how nature-based education models can profoundly impact children's development.
The ideas shared, efforts made, and connections built by each of us have given this project its true meaning. The knowledge and experiences we gained throughout this journey have inspired us all to take meaningful steps toward a better educational future in our communities.
This is not merely an end but the beginning of the story we’ve created together. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to everyone who has been a part of this journey. Looking forward to meeting again in even greater projects in the future…
